Drain Hose Leaking inside 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Our Jeep after a rain will have standing water in the passenger floor board. after much investigation, we have noticed a hose that runs along the upper "body" passenger frame. when you open the door, you remove the plastice that goes along the inside of the door opening (of the body of the car) to the dash. there is a hose that seems to be rotten, becasue when you try to move it it just breaks and crumbles. we haven't removed much of the upper interior to follow the hose from begining to end, but it seems to run toward the rear. Not sure if it has anything to do with the moon roof. But when it rains it leaks from this hose. we want to sell the jeep and don't want to dump a lot of money into it. any suggestions? thanks!

Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

Hi, New to Acer and this forum.

I have recently purchased the above laptop,( Desktop replacement in my case ).

The 1804 was in Mint condition, the fans were totally dust free. It's the coldest running laptop I have ever come across. I only use it for web surfing so it is ideal.

The seller had installed an unauthenticated Win7 on it so I replaced it with XP Home , as that is what the COA shows on the underside. After downloading the appropriate drivers and installing them I found that the wireless would show all available networks in my area,( actually way more than my two other wireless comps find ) it also connects to my ISP but will NOT accept my authentication detail.

I then installed Vista , again DL the drivers and came up with exactly the same prob, can see all available networks but cannot get the authentication accepted.

I have in the past found that if the network can be seen but I couldn't log on then it meant I had not entered the correct details, however in this case I have verified that I am using the correct login detail.

To summarise, two comps connect to the wireless one comp with two OS's won't.

Any help would be appreciated.

Reply 1 : Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

Remove the security altogether and check if it connects when the network is unsecure.

Also make sure that you are using the most recent drivers- not the most recent drivers from Acer.

What's the Wi-Fi card?

Reply 2 : Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

Hi, Thankyou for your reply.

Update: I spent one hour today with my ISP trying all sorts of things, they came to the conclusion that it is a driver problem.

I also hooked up a USB wireless adapter which works faultlessly. I log on at about 14 mps and the adapter was showing 11+ mps throughput , so nothing wrong there.

The card details as per Everest are: InproComm Wireless-g notebook adapter v 4.0... Dev ID 17FE.2220....Sub System 1468-0305.

Re drivers, I have been DL drivers, in fact so many I am getting lost in them.

One message I am getting is : the required line was not found in the INF.

Re logging on sans security, it won't.

cheers, Eddie.

Reply 3 : Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

This card is ancient to say the least- try this & this.

Did it ever work with Vista. It doesn't seem to be officially supported.

Also with some older driver versions it doesnt support WPA so it won't connect unless you use WEP.

Moving the thread to networking.

Reply 4 : Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

Thankyou VERY much, Sir, your blood should be bottled. The second driver worked ! I am only using Xp Home at the moment to write this but will try Vista once I have got over the novelty .

May I ask another question please. Re this ancient card, can I replace it with something more modern?

Just tried with Vista, no go! Mind you I don't mind using XP.

Reply 5 : Acer Aspire 1804 wireless prob?

You should be able to replace it. In most cases Wi-Fi was connected by mini-PCI

(the one on the left).

If you open the service hatch and see a card like this you can just buy another one and install it- no problems at all.

OK! many thanks for your help.

Momentus XT Stutters

I recently upgraded processor from 720QM to 940xm. Am using Throttlestop, and it's very fast. I do a lot of photo and video editing, and my 320 GB drive was starting to fill, so I decided to upgrade to Momentus XT 500 GB. I updated the firmware to version sd25 (latest). It does seem somewhat faster than the 320 gb original, but now I have a new, big problem: Stutter when playing HD video. I use SplashPro for playing video, because it makes better use of video card and hardware acceleration than other players. I have always been able to play HD video smoothly from the previous hard disk, and even from an external drive connected via USB port (2.0). But with the momentus, there is sound stuttering about 2-3 times per second, with some associated lack of video smoothness. I have played with all the drive-related settings I can find, to no avail. I have left messages on the Seagate forum - no response yet.

Has anyone seen this problem? Any solutions?

It's frustrating - I am beginning to think I should simply have gotted a regular 750GB or 1TB drive instead.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Joe

A better solution is to use MPC-HC with madVR and CoreAVC for hardware acceleration. If you want the motion interpolation that Splash Pro provide I suggest some other free options using avisynth scripts that I can introduce you to. But try CoreAVC+madVR and Reclock helps with syncing videos to your display.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I will certainly give these programs a try - CoreAVC seems a particularly good option.

But I need to be really clear - HD video playback was not broken prior to the installation of the Momentus XT drive. I could play HD video and audio smoothly, even with the old 720QM processor from the original 320GB hard disk, from an external hard disk connected via USB 2.0, or from a USB memory stick (also 2.0). So, I think this is not related to the video software or to processor load - it's due to the hard disk. This conclusion is supported by multiple reports of video stuttering with Momentus XT drives, both in MAC's and Windows computers. I would love to find a workaround - but if I can't find one, I'llprobably swap the drive for a conventional 750 GB drive - SSD would be a consideration, but large ones are still pretty expensive.

Yeah it seems to be the case with XT's I'm not sure why though. I don't have one so I can't really help. If you can isolate the problem to only the XT by having an identical windows installation on both drives and seeing how they perform.

WIn7 installation was cloned (via Acronis) from the original 320 GB drive that came with the m15x. I had no problem playing HD video from that drive. I am not home now. Tonight, when I get home, I will play HD video from my external drive via USB to verify that it is the XT.

Thanks,

have had my XT for over 6 months. Fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate, runs well in win media player. Try K-Lite codec pack.

Could be possible that something is hogging system resources.

You might be on the right track. I tried last night from external drive - stuttering is also there, so maybe the Momentus is not the culprit. Video seems smooth, but sound has breaks about 2-3x per second. I tried MPC-HC - sound does not stutter, but video is not as smooth as with Splash Pro. I did install K-Lite - video seems a bit smoother, but audio still with breaks. Thorough antivirus sweep is negative. I did have to reinstall sound drivers after reconstructing the backup - but the latest drivers from the Dell site installed without incident. Am using latest Nvidia driver for the 240m.

Will leave a note on the Splash Pro site - maybe they have a suggestion. Drive seems ok. I did have a BSOD this am, but could have been due to all the software installs - reboot ws uneventful.

Onward,....

Try starting clean, and reinstalling visual C++ 2010 x86 and x64. Install CoreAVC, then install MPC-HC, google madVR and download version 0.52, extract and run install.bat as admin, go to MPC and go the options and select madVR as your renderer. Close program and play video with it.

I'm willing to try some of this - but I am not willing to put in the time it would take to do a clean install. I have way too much software to be willing to reinstall everything - especially since it appears that this issue does not occur for all players. In particular, MPC (after install of CoreAVC) does not show the audio breakup. Unfortunately, the video is significantly less clear and smooth compared with Splash. I have left a message on the Splash site to see if it is a version problem for them.

Thanks,

Joe

Problem with my standard and administrator accounts

I really really need some help on this subject. I tried to ask on Yahoo answers but all I got was useless answers from complete morons.

So this is what happened. A couple of month back I decided to change my main administrator account to standard account and then I changed my guest account into administrator. So after a week i decided to put it back the way it was so i went to my standard account and tried to change it.

I clicked on administrator button and clicked ok but nothing happened, it still said that I was a standard user. i then decided to go to my admin account and change it from there but it wouldnt let me for some reason. The 'standard' option wouldnt let me click on it. Also for some reason, I cant change ANYTHING. even on my admin account.

I cant create a 3rd account because it wont let me, I cant create a password for my admin account so its all out int he open for anyone to go on to and the worst thing is that I use my standard account as my main account and I CAN NOT DO ANYTHING ON IT, I CANT UNINSTALL DIVX PLAYER BECAUSE I HAVE TO BE ADMIN. I CANT EVEN DOWNLOAD ANY SOFTWARE

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE

Reply 5 : Problem with my standard and administrator accounts

No.

My main account is called joseph whilst my second account is called joseph2. The first account use to be the original admin account until I changed it to standard whilst my second account joseph2 is now administrator but use to be the guest account (btw it does not have password protection and i cant seem to create one because it wotn let me change anything)

Reply 6 : Problem with my standard and administrator accounts

I do not have a windows 7 machine here right now but i know this works with windows XP and vista so it should work with windows 7

Load windows into safe mode

When windows is booting fit F8 till you get the advanced boot menu and select safe mode

once in safe mode you should have a account that is listed as just "administrator" and should have no password

login to that account and go to start>control panel>users

and you should be able to change what ever account you want to be a admin account or change the password

let me know if this works

This answer assumes you are not connected to a domain...

Dude login as joseph2 (or what ever account has admin power)

What U need to do is enable the hidden administrator account, when this is done you will have 3 accounts that you can use, (the 2 you already have and administrator).

I did it in Win 7 and I did not have to use SAFE mode, but I am sure this would work it you did.

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Once you have this adminstrator account without a password, login with it and U can manage the other 2.

Help with Alienware Tactx Keyboard customization.

So I recently purchased the Alienware Tactx Keyboard. The command center/alienfx that it came with are severely dated, doesn't anyone know if there are updates available?

Also I've been attempting to edit the alienfx.ath files to makem y own custom themes with .xml notepad. Any tips you guys can give or anything? Is morphing posible through xml on these keyboards?

Also, if anyone can tell me the color codes alienware uses that'd be great because they're reminiscent of html, although not the same. Any help on furthering my customization and enjoyment of this keyboard would be much appreciated.

If you do not have an Alienware system, you will not be able to use the current version of Alienware's Command Center - Command Center will have a current version of AlienFX which is the app used to control the keyboard lighting.

As for the color codes, they are hex color codes. There are 8 digits - the first 2 are transparency and the remaining six are the hex color. You can edit these directly via the theme file (.ath).

Long Boot-up Time

Hello all, I have a question regarding what seems like an extra long boot-up time. Everything seems to work fine and it comes off of standby almost instantly, but when I shut down to do a re-boot to clear it out, it seems like it is taking a little longer than it did when it was new.
And I know adding stuff can make that happen and I do have a few things that I added that I expect to make it take a little longer but I was curious about one thing in particular. I have (4) network drives "mapped" in my Windows Explorer just so I can have quick access to the drives on the other computers in my house. But, most always, non of them are turned on so I get one of those little cloud pop-ups that says something like, "Could not connect to network drives" or something like that.
So, I was just wondering if having a bunch of drives mapped like this can cause Windows to stall a bit during a boot-up because it is looking for drives that aren't there.

And lean? Can to share your HIJACKTHIS LOG? It's worth a quick peek?

And what about this machine? Make, model and details seem absent. For example many install Norton or another large app and then discover it carries a price.

And sorry, I forgot the machine info, it was all in my profile but I should have supplied it here too.
I haven't installed "Hijackthis" on this machine yet and no Norton, I strip that out and use AVG only.
I also examined everything I have "auto-starting" and don't have anything I need except for one questionable item. I use an old Sandisk Thumbdrive as an additional backup to my online banking and it is setup with U3. I know the Cruzer U3 is infamous for trouble but it never caused a problem before, but that's not to say it isn't conflicting with something now. Here is a link to a screen-shot of my Task Manager

Reply 5 : Long Boot-up Time

These machines usually have little protection. Folk add apps plus more protection and sometimes these slow down the boot.

But why BOOT? Why not use hibernation to skip the long boot?
Bob

Reply 6 : Long Boot-up Time

I don't re-boot often, maybe once or twice a week, just to clear the caches and such. Plus, I've encountered an interesting issue where web content can't open my Windows Media Player to see a video or play an mp3 unless I reboot.
When I open the Task Manager, like right now, I only have 26 processes running and just 1 application. So I think I still have it running pretty lean.

You can "make it work" in Canada.

There's mail holding facilities at every border crossing.

For example, here in Ontario, there's CBI USA, which is located 5 minutes into the US from the Niagara Falls access point bridge. You have it shipped there, pay 7.50$ for holding and voila, a laptop at the US price.

If I go with the M11R3, I will be doing this. I already did this successfully with the M11R1 for 549 (incl coupon) many, many months ago

Reply 7 : -409$ off Coupons are working now on M11x-R3

Coupons are great provided you got the $$$ to pay off the machine quickly. Reason is the coupon(s) normally gets you below the qualified amount for 0% financing for 12 months. So depends on your budget you could actually come out ahead customizing it with dells advertised special without the coupon and still qualify for the 12 months 0% financing. If you go the coupon route I'm almost certain you won't qualify unless you offset the price to go up with some cool upgrades etc. Something to think about if you strapped for $$$.

My mind was set on the M14X, but now that we have this coupon for the M11R3 you can literally deck it out for under 1300$ before tax and that's including the 3 year warranty.

This is soooo tempting I just can't make up my mind.

or

Yes you can, there is a company or private people, that you tell to Dell for example where to send the laptop, and then you pay for that company or private company like 50$+ to send it to you.

How to break BIOS password from Windows-XP System..

Hi all
I have a problem in my laptop. I forgot my BIOS password so please help me out how can I log in to my system without formatting my system.

Reply 1 : How to break BIOS password from Windows-XP System..

Let me first mention a misunderstanding. The BIOS-password is totally unrelated to your hard disk, so not changed at all when formatting a partition on a hard disk. In fact, you need to know the BIOS-password to be able to reinstall XP.

Assuming your question is right and you mean the BIOS-password, not the Windows XP-password, you'll have to reset the BIOS. The 2 usual ways to do that: (1) find the reset-BIOS-jumper on the motherboard and (2) remove power adapter and laptop battery and CMOS-battery and wait a few minutes. Where to find everything depends on the laptop, of course.

If you mean the Windows XP password, this doesn't apply. Then please post again, so we can tell you the two common ways to handle that.

Reply 3 : How to break BIOS password from Windows-XP System..

In as few words as possible, BIOS password resets on laptops are not done in any consistent procedure. The reset for a HP is not used on the Toshiba.

If you do want the forum to research this for your laptop, the make and model would have to be revealed.

Album, Track Info.

Want to be able to sort my music chronologically, by original release dates. CDs usually show their release date (year) but not the original release date.
Even more problematic are collections/ anthologies. I need the original release date for each track, as well as which album they first appeared on. Imagine that I can use one or more of the "Sort by" categories to enter this info.
Previously unreleased tracks are a particularly difficult problem. I like to have the first release dates but I'd also like to to put them in better perspective with the artists recording history.
Right now I'm using Allmusic.com to get individual album and track info. but the process is slow and tedious. Any better suggestions?
Also need to know about how and when iTunes uses the "Sort by" categories and what the significance is and how to use and how iTunes uses checkmarks for them.

Security updates available for Adobe Reader and Acrobat

Release date: April 21,2011
Vulnerability identifier: APSB11-08
CVE number: CVE-2011-0611, CVE-2011-0610
Platform: All Platforms

Summary:
Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Reader and Acrobat X (10.0.2) and earlier 10.x and 9.x versions for Windows and Macintosh operating systems. These vulnerabilities, including CVE-2011-0611, as referenced in Security Advisory APSA11-02, could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that one of the vulnerabilities, CVE-2011-0611, is being actively exploited in the wild against both Adobe Flash Player, and Adobe Reader and Acrobat, as well as via a Flash (.swf) file embedded in a Microsoft Word (.doc) or Microsoft Excel (.xls) file delivered as an email attachment targeting the Windows platform. Adobe Reader X Protected Mode mitigations would prevent an exploit of this kind from executing.

Adobe recommends users of Adobe Reader X (10.0.2) for Macintosh update to Adobe Reader X (10.0.3). For users of Adobe Reader 9.4.3 for Windows and Macintosh, Adobe has made available the update, Adobe Reader 9.4.4. Adobe recommends users of Adobe Acrobat X (10.0.2) for Windows and Macintosh update to Adobe Acrobat X (10.0.3). Adobe recommends users of Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3 for Windows and Macintosh update to Adobe Acrobat 9.4.4. Because Adobe Reader X Protected Mode would prevent exploits of the type targeting CVE-2011-0611 from executing, we are currently planning to address these issues in Adobe Reader X for Windows with the next quarterly security update for Adobe Reader, currently scheduled for June 14, 2011. Today's security updates are out-of-cycle updates.

Affected software versions:
• Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) and earlier versions for Windows
• Adobe Reader X (10.0.2) and earlier versions for Macintosh
• Adobe Acrobat X (10.0.2) and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh

NOTE: Adobe Reader 9.x for UNIX, Adobe Reader for Android, and Adobe Reader and Acrobat 8.x are not affected by CVE-2011-0611.

Solution:
Adobe recommends users update their software installations by following the instructions below:

Adobe Reader
Users on Windows and Macintosh can utilize the product's update mechanism. The default configuration is set to run automatic update checks on a regular schedule. Update checks can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check for Updates.

Adobe Reader 9.x users on Windows can also find the appropriate update here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows.

Adobe Reader 10.x and 9.x users on Macintosh can also find the appropriate update here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Macintosh.

NOTE: Because Adobe Reader X (10.x) Protected Mode would prevent an exploit of this kind from executing, we are planning to address this issue in Adobe Reader X for Windows with the next quarterly security update for Adobe Reader, currently scheduled for June 14, 2011

Adobe Acrobat
Users can utilize the product's update mechanism. The default configuration is set to run automatic update checks on a regular schedule. Update checks can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check for Updates.

Acrobat Standard and Pro 10.x and 9.x users on Windows can also find the appropriate update here:

removing "MS Removal Tool" worm

This malware (worm?) pretended to be software which detects viruses etc. It attempts to get payment to buy the "protection" to remove the fake viruses it finds. It has interfered with my McAfee virus software. When I try to start a scan, I get a message that the McAfee exec is infected. When I try to uninstall it, it blocks me from getting to the Control menu. It even interferes with internet links to info on how to remove it. What should I do/use to get rid of this? I found a write-up on "Spyware Doctor" to remove this worm(internet on an uninfected computer). Has anyone dealt with this issue or this antivirus software?
My system is a Dell XPS M1530 running Window Vista.

If you are not a member of BleepingComputer you will probably see ads above the removal guide. Disregard those and scroll down to the guide. It would probably also be a good thing to print out the instructions.

RubyShoe..

You wrote, 'It even interferes with internet links to info on how to remove it.' IF you don't have another computer at your disposal, in order to view the removal guide at the site Roddy suggested, try the below.

Reboot into "Safe Mode with Networking". Check to see if the following settings were changed by the malware.

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab. Click on the "LAN Settings" button. If there is a check in the box "Use a proxy server for your LAN", uncheck it. Click "OK". Then "OK", again.

Open Firefox. Go to Tools>Options>Advanced. Click on the "Network" tab. To the right of where you see ""Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet", click on the "Settings" button. Put a tick mark next to "No proxy". Click "OK". Then "OK", again.

IF the above doesn't allow you to access the removal guide, you will need to end the offending process with the Rkill tool. It's also possible the malware will prevent you from downloading the tool/s. In this case, it will become necessary to use another computer, in order to download and transfer the files to yours.

Try checking your settings first. Let us know if you're able to access the guide. If not, we'll include further instructions.

Best of luck..
Carol

Thank you so much for this link. I was able to print the guide from an uninfected computer. Its downloaded tools worked like a charm and its step-by-step instructions were clear and easy to follow. And unlike the program I was considering, this did not require that I purchase anything. You guys are THE BEST.

This worked GREAT!!! Thanks so much. This took some time to run (about an hour), but it did the job and we are very thankful for the use of the tool and the detailed instructions. Thanks again!!!

Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

So I happen to have a pair of USB speakers that I like to use as a complement to my notebook's internal speakers. I use to do that on Linux, using Pulse Audio stream that creates a "virtual" device that is nothing more than the output being doubled through two real devices. Any application sees that virtual device and the actual result is the sound being projected through both pair of speakers (internal and external USB).

I wonder if there is a way of doing so in Windows. I did some googlin' and haven't found any hopeful words on that. It seems that Windows would simply deal with only one sound device at each time and there is nothing that one could do about it.

It seems odd, it must be something that people could use (having the sound output for two different places at the same time) and it doesn't make sense to me that no one has ever came up with a solution for that on Windows.

Anyone here have a clue?

Reply 1 : Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

running multiple output 'zones' is generally exclusive to media players more sophisticated than the native Windows Media Player.

Reply 2 : Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

I usually use Winamp to handle my music collection and Media Player Classic HC for videos and movies.

I could use solutions regarding those (or other software) but I would prefer something that would apply for all system, as I have on Linux.

Reply 3 : Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

ASIO driver should be able to do it. I remember being able to assign the left and right channels to each device before.

Reply 4 : Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

hmmm

I remember using Asio when I was playing with the computer inputs... some years ago.

I'll get it and see what I can do with it.

Thanks!

I still would like to see other solutions, if anybody know any.

I just want to have the sound that's played on any Windows application to come out from two outputs at the same time (in the case, internal notebook speakers and USB speakers).

Sorry, I misunderstood, if you want to use it for ALL windows applications then is not for you.

It's a DJ software, that let's you choose up to 3 or 4 different audio output channels, but obviously just for music.

Reply 8 : Is there any way for Windows to play sound trough 2 different devices?

Thanks anyway, yukinok25.

I downloaded Asio4All driver, installed, but still haven't figured it out how to used it in order to manage output devices. I'm not at home now, I'll give a better try later.

Try going into your Sound Devices and "listen" to this device through Stereo Mix/What U Hear. Your listen device should be your secondary set of speakers.

8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

Just installed 2X 4GB Corsair memory modules (CM3X4GSD1066) and system couldn't boot. After few attempts got it up and working but after restart it went silent again( just green WiFi LED was on). Removed one module and replaced with 2 GB and everything is OK now. Any suggestions how to solve this problem.

Acer 4810 TG Win7 64.

Reply 1 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

try the modules individually, maybe you got a faulty module. Either that or there's a compatibility problem.

Reply 2 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

Tried them both individually... the only time when I have problems is when they're both in. Right now I'm running 4+2 with no issues.

Reply 3 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

The number of Chips on the Memory Module matters as well sometimes it will cause issue on high density memory modules.

Reply 4 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

Interesting to know...any others report that bug as i planned upgrading soon my memory modules (same corsair ones 4gb x2)

Reply 5 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

Problem solved:

Replaced Corsair memory modules( I bought them seperatly not as a pair) with Dual pack 2X4 Gig Mushkin 991644 (996644) .

Everything is working OK.

Reply 6 : 8 GB RAM 4810T unstable

I'm going through the same thing here guys with my 4810 TGZ - tried Corsair, Crucial and now Mushkin but nothing working. Definitely running 64bit Os Win 7 - anything else I need to do? I'm going mad!!!

Funny thing is, the laptop will eventually boot up, and says it has 8Gb memory, but runs like it as 256Mb!!!

Dell Inspiron 15r with switchable lids

I have a few questions about the new Dell Inspiron R series with the 2nd generation Intel processors. First of all, in the tech specs, it lists the screen as a 720p screen. Is this actually 720p? That seems a little low for a brand-new laptop. I would also like some feedback on the i3 2310m with the HD 3000 graphics. Will this be fine for web browsing, document creation, and flash-based games? Also, will the HD 3000 be fine for watching DVDs on a 1080p TV through the HDMI port? Does anyone actually have this laptop yet? If so, what are your impressions of the screen, build quality, and the switchable lid mechanism. Feel free to bring up any other concerns or questions about this notebook.

Thanks in advance for replies!

Reply 1 : Dell Inspiron 15r with switchable lids

720p = 1368x768. The screen is grainy and terrible.

Intel HD graphics is more than enough to do basic office productivity, flash games and YouTube.

Yes HD graphics will handle 1080p video.

Build quality is decent, exactly like the N5010/N5030, the only thing that got refreshed was the chipset/CPU, chassis is near identical. I can't comment on the switchable lids.

Reply 2 : Dell Inspiron 15r with switchable lids

Thanks! Is the screen really that bad? This would be coming from an old vaio with a 1280 x 800 screen. I'm looking this up for a friend, so I won't be using it. My friend has been working on an old vaio VGN-fs810w.

Having problems with DVD SHRINK

Hi,

I have been a user of DVD Shrink for quiet a while. Today I wanted to back up some DVDs from TV shows and movies (I'm not selling them or giving them away its for my own private use), in case the original gets worn out etc.

I opened DVDSHRINK and Avast told me I should open it in Sandbox. I don't do that is so I deleted the program, I was scared I had a virus after last weeks virus attack on my computer which I got professionally fixed. I went and downloaded Shrink from here and it said my trial was over and to activate it. I click activate and my web broweser Firefox with its Web of Trust add on told me the webpage was not safe.

Is there another program that will do what I want other than Shrink? I don't care if its a trial.

Thanks,
GW

Can you give that link for the activation that WOT warned you about? DVDShrink is a well known title and I am surprised WOT has marked it like that.

What was last week's virus attack?

M11x R1 price went up to $800?

That's... interesting....

I was hoping to find a sub-$600 deal on it soon now that R3 is almost here, not seeing the price jump $200

Lame, looks like I'll be buying a $435 Asus 1215B (AMD E350 CPU) instead, since I don't really need gaming on the go, just figured it would be nice if it was around the same price point ($400-$600).

Reply 1 : M11x R1 price went up to $800?

Hmm that is weird. Maybe the Dell outlet has some good R1 deals?

Reply 2 : M11x R1 price went up to $800?

but it was always at that price... 600 was with a disscount of 200 bugs..

I saw the 599$ price for the r1 for months.

But ya there is good deals on the outlet, Thats were i got my m11x in sig which was 820shipped

Saw couple r1s for under 600$ there just now.

This is awesome cause now my i7 will maintain its value better.

Maybe this is indication that the r3 is imminent and dell wants to make prices stronger.

m11x r1 surely will dissapear in some weeks...

m11x r2 will cost 100 or 200 dollars less..

and r3 will start at 999 bugs...

CPU spiking when idle

It seems that when I leave my laptop alone to go into sleep mode, the CPU keeps spiking at rather random intervals. Sometimes it spikes to 30% on one core just for a second.

I have it set to dim display at 5 minutes, turn monitor off at 15 minutes, and to sleep at 20 minutes. It seems that just before the screen turns off, at about 14 minutes the BFE service and svchost.exe (defragsvc) take up about 50% of my CPU!!

I have also seen the ssdp discovery service running and taking up some CPU power aswell

This is a relatively new windows 7 installation, so I don't know what went wrong. I installed it on the 12th and don't want to format again because the updates may push me over my internet bandwidth limit.

Are these kind of spikes normal??
I am EXTREMELY paranoid of viruses and malware

So far I have run a full scan of Microsoft security essentials, Malwarebytes anti malware, and Spybot search and destroy, none have found anything at all.

Before the reformat I haven't experienced anything like these spikes. I don't know if that's because I haven't been paying attention to it this much, or if something has infected me, or if something is wrong with my windows 7 installation...

All help is greatly appreciated!

Reply 1 : CPU spiking when idle

Windows 7 is by far the least "quiet" of the Windows OSes. That is, it is normal for it to spike like that as it indexes or does something else.

However I find most folk are blissfully unaware that we still must find and install drivers for our machines even when Windows 7 seems to have found them all. For example my last install had me install Intel's storage manager even though I didn't have RAID.

You also write SPYBOT which conflicts with some apps today. I'd remove that.
Bob

Reply 2 : CPU spiking when idle

I guess that's true :/ I'm going to be using my linux partition more often...

I'm almost completely sure I have all of my drivers. Possibly one or two of them may be old... or I may have forgotten to install on or two of them...

Oh yes and for spybot I uninstalled it right after it gave me the information that I was clean, I usually never use it but I just needed a third thumbs up to calm my virus paranoia

Thanks yet again Bob, you're a life saver.
The stress would have driven me insane...

Sound card shot? Ethernet port shot.

Hello, I have an HP Pavillion dv9000 and I suspect that the sound card isn't working correctly. I have tried two pair of speakers and neither sound good (the 2nd pair being Bose Companion II, which sound decent on my work computer). I'm wondering if I need to replace my sound card. If so, how much should this cost, including labor?

My computer did get zapped by a power surge during a storm and the Ethernet port does not work (diagnosed w/ an HP tech via phone). I've been using an ethernet to USB adapter and that's been fine. Could the sound card have been zapped too?

Are there any reputable chains to have the work done at? Thank you!

Reply 1 : Sound card shot? Ethernet port shot.

The dv6000 and dv9000 line are well known for such things to outright product failures. Google if you must but if the factory restore fails to restore sound or ethernet you might try some USB to sound or USB to ethernet solutions since those are really cheap.

DO NOT INVEST IN REPAIR on this model. If you need to know why, just google dv9000 recall and such.

EXAMPLE AUDIO USB and such follows. Be sure to shop around at amazon, frys and geeks.

Reply 2 : Sound card shot? Ethernet port shot.

Thanks Bob! Yes, I have that exact Trendnet adapter and it works quite well. I guess I'll stick with it since I shouldn't put any money into the computer. I almost did a factory restore w/ the HP tech, but I didn't want to get all of my docs and pics off my computer, so the adapter it is. happy

Thanks for the suggestion of an external sound card. I didn't know such a thing existed. I'm not clear how it works, so I'll have to read up on it. I play music from the hard drive, CDs, and listen to online radio.

The recalls are so sad. Other than these couple issues, this has been a very reliable computer with MUCH less issues than the Dells that I have used. If I were to replace it tomorrow, I'd get another HP without hesitation. I'll have to check for recalls this time. wink

Thanks again.

Sending pictures in smaller size on Outlook Express

In the past, if I had a picture up on Windows, I could click on "e-mail this photo", and it would give me pop-up box that asked if I wanted to make the picture small, or send original size. Then it would take me to my Outlook Express screen, and I could type in the name of the recipient, and it would send it in about 10 seconds. Now, the e-mail screen looks a bit different, and it never "attaches" the photo. Anybody know how to fix this? - rankrum

Reply 1 : Sending pictures in smaller size on Outlook Express

I don't know of "e-mail this foto", but right clicking on the photo in Explorer, then choose Sent to..., then choose 'e-mail recipient' (there might be several variations, try all) worked with me.

You can make modded inf yourself (easy task), or go to laptopvideo2go instead of cursing Nvidia. Your OEM is the reason for not including your GPU in the latest driver updates.

Domain question?

I work at a place and if I have a cat 5 network cable I can plug my laptop into any jack here and get on the internet? Is that good shouldnt I have to get access to the domain before getting on the internet?

Thanks in advance

Reply 1 : Domain question?

This can be true or false depending on how good the IT staff is. The best will limit access to authorized machines. If you can do what you asked, there is a security issue at that site.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch is not much of a start but you do see security mentioned here and there.

The choice of what security to use is often set by the skill and budget of the IT effort often sets what security they deploy.

If they ever ask why it matters then they are at the lower end of the IT skill spectrum.

If there is a need for such security is worth discussing, but from a liability and protecting the company from harm the simple fact that anyone can jack in and gain internet access could put a company at risk today.

For example I could put a small unauthorized wifi router on a plug and it could be a long time till they found it siphoning out company information.

Or worse some one could download content that governments track and then the company is on the hook for fines or worse.

Downloading pics from my camera to my computer

I have Vista for Windows. I cannot seem to download just one picture from my camera to my computer. The system is indicating that I must download every picture in the camera I have attached to my computer. This doesn't seem right. It was so simple with Windows XP. I just looked thru the pics on my camera, and selected the ones I wanted to download. Can anyone help me. Perhaps direct me to where I can get help. Oh, free help.I can't see why I should have to pay for instructions on how to use a product I have already paid for

Reply 1 : Downloading pics from my camera to my computer

1. When you post, tell the make and model of the camera.

2. Try the Cnet Digital Camera Forum

But without make or model, I'm wondering if there is something simple we can do.
Bob

Reply 2 : Downloading pics from my camera to my computer

Windows detects your newest pictures and doesn't import duplicate versions of older pictures that you've already copied to your computer. This way you get all your pictures on the computer with no repeats. If you view your pictures in Photo Gallery, you can view in large previews making it easy to decide which pictures you'd like to delete from your computer.

Your reply was the most succinct. I guess I just have to down load any new pictures from my camera, and just delete the ones I don't want.

If you used the default Windows program to import your photos, maybe you can't, but have you tried other methods ? Using a card reader, for example ? Some cameras can be treated as a storage device and you can browse the photos and select which to download..... Have you read through the owner's manual for the camera ?

Reply 5 : Downloading pics from my camera to my computer

not a fan of this feature. many times i have different events taken but not downloaded. Sometimes a couple hundred pics. I might only want to download one event or one pic. It just takes too long to download two hundred pics for just one or two shots. I have vista on my laptop and do not want all my pics on it but i will download everything to my XP at home.

Problems with latest AVG Free update

I had avg2011 (1120) installed and working fine on 3 xp sp3 systems. Attempting to install the latest update (1321) i consistently get the Error code 0xc0070643 with "Prepare driver installation failure) 0xE0010058 MSI action failed. I updated to the latest MSI from Microsft, unregistered and registered it and each of the 3 systems fails installation with the same error. On 1 system I wiped all evidence of AVG using the removal tool, manual file and directory deletion and a manual review of the registry. My logs are at https://rapidshare.com/files/457219301/avglogs04-13-2011.zip Same error in safe mode installation...Any thoughts appreciated

links to the msinfo file but the previous version of AVGFree 2011 was fine on this same system with no hardware changes. I upgraded my windows 7 laptop with no issues so I suspect some issue with XP

Reply 3 : Problems with latest AVG Free update

I unchecked all options under custom install but didn't see firewall among them. I was able to reinstall version 9 but when I tried to upgrade it demanded a reboot after uninstalling 9 and it then gave the same error code as 1032 of 2011 commenced to install..

How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

I want to increase the bit rate of a lot of my MP3 files and I was wondering how you would go about doing that?
Thanks in advance.

Reply 1 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

Two options:
1. Download a version with a higher bitrate.
2. Rerip the original it came from with a higher bitrate.

You need more than just the file with the lower bitrate to do it.

Kees

Reply 2 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

How would you rerip the original? Would you do that with a program? If so, could you recommend a program?

Reply 3 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

Ripping a CD can be done with Windows Media Player, for example. And many other programs, as shown by a google search for RIP CD.

Kees

Reply 4 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

if you just want to try, I would convert the mp3 back to .wav then convert .wav to the mp3 at a higher bit rate. Give that a try and see if there are any improvement.

Reply 5 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

But you would do that with a software program, right?
Could you recommend one for me?
Thank you.

Reply 6 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

I'd use CDEX for it (free download).

Kees

Reply 7 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

But I didn't get any of my music off of a CD, I downloaded it from places like Amazon.
Or did you mean to put my MP3 files on a CD instead?

Reply 8 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

I'm afraid the sound quality will only become worse if you convert it to wav and back again with a higher bitrate. But probably not enough to hear any difference.
Anyway, it's free to experiment.

http://download.cnet.com/CDex/3000-2140_4-10055262.html?tag=mncol;1

install it on your computer. It can convert mp3 to .wav file. or from .wav to mp3 or other formats.

Reply 11 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

Going from lossy (mp3) to lossless (WAV) and then back to lossy again can only result in a degradation of quality (as will going from, say a 128 kbps mp3, up to 320 kbps). The quality of the sound file was lost when the music was converted into an mp3 of any given bit rate, and can only be restored by re-copying the information from the original source (i.e., the master file or the CD). Otherwise you'll just be getting a further loss of quality with each generation of copy you make.

Reply 12 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

Thank you for this information.
It was very helpful.

Reply 13 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

How did it go?

Reply 14 : How can you increase the bit rate of an MP3 file?

To be honest, I couldn't tell a difference.

Uninstalling Acronis True Image 2011 disables Windows backup

Uninstalling Acronis True Image 2011 disables Windows 7 backup, even if one enables Windows backup before exiting and then uninstalling True Image. There are complaints about this on Acronis forums, but Acronis seems to have little interest in fixing the problem and there seems to be no way to contact them directly. Apparently a fix requires editing the registry, which I am reluctant to try. I'd be grateful for help.

In the meantime, DO NOT INSTALL THE TRIAL VERSION OF THIS PROGRAM! If you do, you will not be able to revert to Windows 7 backup if you decide you don't want it.

How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

I am doing some video editing on my laptop (Vista). I'd transferred videos from handycam to laptop, now the hard disk is full. I need more space for editing and burning. I tried to move some Avi files (12-14GB) to an external hard drive that still has over than 100GB space available. It said "The file is too large for the destination file system." I searched answer online, I'd tried: convert E(drive letter): /fs:ntfs Still it didn't work. Another problem is that my DVD burner stopped working few days ago. My laptop doesn't recognize external DVD burner either when I plugged it in. The laptop manufacture suggested full factory recovery. So, I really need to move those files from this laptop or I'll lose them. Does anyone know the trick? Thanks.

Reply 1 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

Thanks for the info.
First I used right click on MY COMPUTER - Manage - Disk Management - Delete Partition, and it caused an error (blue screen - dump of physical memory). After restarting, my computer didn't show the external HD drive, but it was there (without drive letter) when I open SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE. I had to reformat to FAT32 (got the file from the manufacture website, Western Digital), then finally I was able to convert it using:
convert driveletter: /fs:ntfs /nosecurity
I got from: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheDuhFilesTheFileIsTooLargeForTheDestinationFileSystem.aspx
I guess the /nosecurity command makes a difference.
I also found out Maxtor & Seagate FreeAgent brands are NTFS, but Western Digital is FAT32.

Reply 2 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

Did you ever figure out how to move the big .avi files? I am in the same boat as you. I captured my large video file to my computer's hard drive, but when I tried to move the file to my external hard drive, it said I did not have enough room on my computer to move the file. The external hard drive I am moving it to have over 200 GB of memory, so it must be referring to my desktop computer, but I didn't think I would need room on it to remove the file. The file is like 13 GB, and I now only have like 2 GB of free memory. Does anyone know what I can do?

I also have another question that is closely related. I was just wondering if anyone knew a good video compressor. I captured one hour of footage from my Sony video camera and the file was over 13 GB. I was just wondering if there was a way to compress it into a different type of file (smaller) without losing too much quality. Thanks for the help!

Reply 3 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

Kdubbiu11,
you have to change your external HD system to NTSF.
Please go to: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheDuhFilesTheFileIsTooLargeForTheDestinationFileSystem.aspx

Follow the instruction:
Run an Administrator Console (click the Start Menu, type cmd, then right click on the command prompt and click "Run As Administrator") then run:
C:UsersScott>convert h: /fs:ntfs /nosecurity
Replace:
Scott -> name on your computer
h: -> the drive letter where your external HD is

After you type that command, just wait. You might not see any progress on the screen, but it's working.
Then you'll see the rest of the information.
It will take a while until you see: Conversion complete.

I don't know about video compressor, but if this works, it shouldn't be a problem anymore for you.
Good luck!

Reply 4 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

But what if i need the hard drive to be formatted Fat32?
THEN what is the solution to the problem?

Reply 5 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

Dictated by the FAT32 choice. FAT32 limits file sizes to 4GB so all files must be that or smaller.
Bob

Reply 6 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

Partition it. You can find some free programs out there that'll separate the hard drive into several. You can then format them separately however you want.

Reply 7 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

I agree with the above poster that having 2 partitions on the drive (one NTFS for the really BIG files, one FAT for all other) might be a good solution.

If you use that disk only to MOVE the file to another destination and not to PLAY the file from it, you can consider using a file splitter (many freeware ones available, many that don't buffer should work, if their internal byte counter is big enough) to split the file in 3 or 4 smaller ones that fit on your FAT32 partition and glue them together at the receiving side.

Kees

Reply 8 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

theres a progrma called xilisoft converter. It splits any sort of media file into whatever proportion you want them to be in meaning nothing involving your external will take place except for copying the final files. For more information pm me and ill hook you up with the program.

I tried this, and it resulted in, "Conversion could not be completed." I have a Vista.. Uhm... The file I want to be transferred onto a Verbatim 1Tb external H.D. is 13 Gb. (I already know the limitations of FAT32, and want NTFS, obviously..) I waswondering if you could help me..?

Reply 11 : How to copy big avi files to external hard drive?

it's very easy to change FAT32 to NTFS. Windows can do this for you, BUT REMEMBER, it WILL destroy all files on that harddrive. So be careful you don't pick the wrong one for reformating...and be sure to backup the files first. Good luck.

To format a harddrive: right-click on the harddrive then select format, then ntfs file system.

Use this if things go wrong

M11x R2 BIOS recovery guide

Reply 1 : R2 335m nvidia bios flashing to increase voltage

Very nice find. Am I to understand that this individual is capable of modifiying the BIOS on the 335? If so, is this person capable of editing the BIOS of the M11x? The reason I ask, the limited number of contacts I have, I found one that knew enough of BIOS programming to tell me that it is possible to program the M11xR2 to be a manual switch but he doesn't have anywhere near the time to put into the project before it would be pointless.

This is very intriguing. Will send this to him to look over. Not that I do not trust you or the other person, as I give everyone a general level of trust. Its just I don't trust just anyone to flash a ROM blindly. Returned too many phones and other electronics as it is. Damn stores all know me by name...

Reply 2 : R2 335m nvidia bios flashing to increase voltage

haha im a complete newb with this stuff, i think DavyGT is working on this to get a flashable ROM. what phone do you have may i ask? I sportin an Atrix 4G which has a locked bootloader so im not flashing nearly as many ROMs as i should be

Reply 3 : R2 335m nvidia bios flashing to increase voltage

Running an HTC EVO right now with VirusRom on it. Going to go back to Cyanogen later this month though. The Atrix is a nice phone, but doesn't surprise me about the bootloader. It seems just about everyone is doing everything they can to lock them down. Real shame too, since the modding community has helped them sell phones better than they ever would have.

Almost feel like doing a search for some of the Dell BIOS engineers (found one on Linked In, but not connected to him) and seeing if it couldn't be put into a 'final' release or something. It bugs me now that I know it is possible but is limited. Likely due to some slimy contract that Intel created when they sold the rights to Dell.

To stop your average user from making changes, is not only smart, but it is business smart. To stop your enthusiast from making changes is not smart, cause where there is a will, there is a way.

Reply 4 : R2 335m nvidia bios flashing to increase voltage

Ah yes, the BIOS. My M11x Windows install stuffed at that very crucial moment so I needed to work on reinstalling yesterday. It's not as simple as recompiling the BIOS, which is already done and undone, I have to also work out how to create a Crisis disk in case somebody bricks their M11x. Any help there will appreciated.

Note this VBIOS doesn't change Optimus in any way, it only increases the voltage.

In the mean time, use OCCT GPU stress to see what your max temperatures are as the BIOS will increase temperature for increased voltage, if it works.

There maybe something for the R1.

Reply 5 : R2 335m nvidia bios flashing to increase voltage

What will upping the voltage do for the 335M? Make overclocks more stable? I've overclocked my CPU to 180 with no problems, but my GPU is stuck at 520/840/1240....

Yes, it will increase overclocks. In theory, since the is not a Vmod, as long as the GT335 is not using 3D clocks, battery life shouldn't be affected.

I'll release the BIOS when I get home in 8hrs.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. This is only for the R2, and the R1 users may benefit from it.
