asus eee pc 900 brightness Stuck

My eel pc brightness is stuck on lowest level as keyboard shortcut keys for adjusting no longer work. Asus tech support explained there is no way too adjust this through Its Linux os. They said I need replace keyboard. This is hard to believe!!? Anyone have any advice?
