New Folders on Mac

I started a new folder called WRITING (obviously to put all my writing in) but when I try and move a document into the folder it disappears. How do I put documents in the folder without the fear that they're just going to disappear forever!

dragging something to a closed folder, and pausing there for a moment, causes the folder to open.
When it does, let go of the mouse button.
The folder should now contain the file you dragged.

Exactly what are you doing to move the document?
